Server Rack Definition
Designed to accommodate, organise, protect, secure and stack a variety of computer server and network hardware components, a network rack is primarily a metal frame – which is also known by a variety of names. In fact, the word network is associated with the placement of all this equipment in the rack.
Network Rack Set-Up
Even though some racks are designed to be fitted with specific types of devices, some hold a variety of computer systems and servers. To ensure that the equipment remains in place, the rack uses a variety of hardware including bolts and brackets among others. Which Type Of Equipment Can Be Housed in A Network Rack?
A wide selection of hardware can be housed in a network rack. There are many different types of hardware covered under the term network equipment. Here’s a brief list of some of the types of equipment you can expect to find in a network rack:
Network Switches: Used in a LAN (Local Area Network), these are high-speed devices with multiple ports that receive and redirect data to the right receiving devices. The transmission of information across a network can only be done via switches.
Network Routers: Designed to also facilitate the transmission of data across multiple networks, routers primarily receive and redirect data just like switches. As such, various networks or devices within a network can use one router to connect to the internet.
Network Modems – These devices act as a link between your network’s router and your internet source. An Ethernet cord is used to make this connection.
Two Post Relay Rack Versus Network Rack
For a more affordable entry-level network rack mount that is also easy to use, a 2 post open frame relay rack is a great option. When used to house this type of hardware, a 2 post rack can be considered to be a network rack. 2 thin central mounted posts that are parallel to each other, 19” to 23” apart, extend from a thicker balanced base in a 2 post rack mount.

In comparison to more robust racks, the 2 post rack is easier to install and start using thanks to its lightweight portable frame. To install hardware onto the rack you simply attach a brace to each component and then use the brace to mount the components to the mounting posts on the rack.

For the most secure hold, it is recommended that you mount your devices centrally when using two-post relay racks to house your network equipment. You need to bolt the centre of the hardware bracket to the parallel posts on both sides when mounting equipment centrally. You get to improve balance, reduce pressure on the rack and centralised weight distribution by centrally mounting networking equipment on a two-post server rack. However, if you are using lighter, low profile server rack technology, flush mounting might be a more suitable option.
