Apple is drawing attention to the danger of developers requesting “Full Disk Access” permissions for their applications.

Apple is taking concrete steps to make it harder for users to run agentic artificial intelligence on their Macs, citing worries about privacy and security. While the company has lagged behind competitors on the software side of AI, its hardware business for AI workloads is expanding rapidly.

Agentic AI describes systems that let users ask bots to carry out tasks on their behalf, and the technology is gaining traction as firms such as OpenAI and Meta roll out new agent capabilities. These agents typically need almost unrestricted access to a device’s files, messages, passwords and online accounts, which creates a serious risk if the software is not built with strong safeguards.

Privacy and Security Risks

Some owners are granting agents full control of their computers, allowing the software to read and modify messages, open files, retrieve passwords, and interact with personal accounts. If an agent is compromised by a malicious or “poisoned” prompt, hackers could exploit that access to steal sensitive data or to conduct further attacks on the user’s network.

Apple is drawing attention to the danger of developers requesting “Full Disk Access” permissions for their applications. The company argues that this level of exposure not only threatens the individual’s privacy but also endangers the privacy of anyone they communicate with.

Apple’s Response

The firm posted an update on its developer forum titled “Updates to Full Disk Access in macOS.” The announcement describes new controls that require users to take explicit actions before an app can obtain full-disk rights.

Implications for Users

The added restrictions may raise the difficulty of installing and running agentic AI tools on Macs, but the company views the trade-off as essential for safeguarding personal information.
