Cloudflare launches serverless event streaming service

Cloudflare has launched K2, a serverless event streaming service, in public beta. The service is built on top of R2 object storage, which provides a durable and partitioned log. According to Cloudflare, K2 has a produce latency of about one second at p99.

The service was initially developed to support Basin Pipelines, which required a durable storage solution for events before they were processed. Cloudflare couldn’t use Apache Kafka due to its requirements, so they built K2 on top of R2, which provides eleven nines of durability with strongly consistent APIs.
