Microsoft ends support for Calendar, People, Files companion apps

Microsoft will end support for its Calendar, People, and Files companion apps on December 16, 2026, rendering them unusable after that date. This decision comes after Microsoft initially deployed the trio across Windows 11 enterprise systems roughly a year ago as part of automatic updates. The company has since halted their distribution through Microsoft 365 Apps updates, placing responsibility for removal on administrators and end users before the deadline.

The three applications, Calendar, People, and Files, were created to integrate core functions directly into the Windows 11 taskbar. They enabled users to view contacts, manage events, and locate files without launching separate programs. The People app also worked with Copilot to assist with tasks like finding colleagues or retrieving documents through AI. By design, the apps launched automatically upon system startup, though users could disable this behavior. IT departments could block installations via the Apps Admin Center.

Microsoft originally promoted the tools as productivity enhancers, arguing they reduced task-switching. However, the company has now reversed course, opting to phase out the apps entirely without announcing a direct replacement for their taskbar functionality. Administrators must manually remove the apps from managed devices by the cutoff date. For unmanaged systems, users will need to uninstall them themselves, as Microsoft will not perform the removal automatically. This shift aligns with the company’s broader strategy of embedding features directly into Windows 11 rather than relying on standalone companion applications.

Microsoft’s move reflects a growing industry trend toward consolidating tools within operating systems. The Calendar, People, and Files apps were once framed as essential for streamlined workflows, but their taskbar integration may have introduced unnecessary complexity for some organizations. Without a defined successor, companies must now assess alternative solutions, such as native Windows 11 features, third-party applications, or other Microsoft services, to maintain access to these functions.

In a separate but related development, Microsoft is encouraging IT teams to transition Entra ID users to more secure authentication methods, including passkeys, QR code verification, or FIDO2 security keys, before retiring SMS-based authentication in February 2027. The company emphasizes that this change supports its long-term goal of eliminating weaker verification methods. The push for enhanced security measures complements Microsoft’s broader efforts to reduce dependence on less reliable authentication protocols.
